Hi all, I just read Jill and Rickys note and felt almost guilty that I do visit "Joel" here from time to time without leaving a note and that's a shame. I'm sure with all the "growth" in the Pollack/Rutsky clan, its painful not to have Uncle Joel around to see him playing with the kids, knowing what a great Uncle he would be. I know first hand how painful it is to look at my own kids and then shake my head almost in disbelief that my parents will never meet them, very tough to swallow. I'm certainly convinced at the ripe old age of 40 that there is something/someone running this whole show and when I look at Joels face on the left side of this page, I'm pretty sure hes part of the staff running the show and looking after us. There are just people taken too soon from us and we'll never know why. The best we can do is carry on our lives the way they would've wanted us to and by the looks and sounds of it Joel is very proud of you all! My love to all of you, Howie

hey buddy. after meeting you on this board nearly 7 yrs ago after another Worst of Days, i feel like we've taken our degrees of separation in a few notches. i read rick's comment about regretting not having you around to 'uncle' the kids and realized that, of all the times i sense your presence, your spirit has been most palpable when i'm with my niece and nephew. i'm thinking that we both feed off that Uncle Energy. and the same idea applies elsewhere, doesn't it? projecting co-generated energy (body+spirit) toward areas where real good can be done. has the makings of one of those 'magnificent obsessions.' gratefully, matty

I’m so glad my sister Jillybean posted her last note. It is coming up on a decade since we lost our dear brother Joel...he would be 44 on May 17th and was taken from us on May 24th 1998. It is mind-blowing to know we’ve gone 10 years without him by our side. One of the hardest things is not having Joel around to be the incredible Uncle to our children. Hey Pollacks, Rutskys and everyone else who fits into the "family" circle...Just stopped by to see how Joel's website was doing and to say "hey" to everyone. Actually, to be perfectly honest, I visit the site to see Joel's picture and just look at him looking back at me. Puts me into some kind of a trance for a while there. Such a great picture of Joel. Can't believe how many years it has been since Joel was taken from all of us. He made sucha n impact on SO many people in his life. Truly amazing, really ! Your whole family has always had and always will have a special place in my heart. I feel a very strong connection to you all. Although we don't see each other so often, at least emails keeps us in touch with each other to some degree. When I light the Shabbat candles every Friday night, I always say a special prayer for Joel. I am so glad that we have kept in touch over the years ! I was fortunate enough to grow up across the street from the Pollack family in Syosset. I recently lost a dear friend of mine to colon cancer at the ripe old age of 36. The pain I felt in my heart was eerily similiar when my brother Nunzio told me about the passing of Joel. Even though Joel had Ricky as his baby brother, he always treated me like his own. When I reminisce about my childhood, I see his smiling face and can hear his infectious laugh. I'm grateful that Joel was part of my childhood, I just wish wonderful people like Ken O'Donnell and Joel Pollack would have stayed in our lives longer.

Hey Joel...I work with your mother who is one of the most extraordinary woman in the world! (not just saying that) and I only wish we had met...she keeps your memory going strong always and has told me more stories about you than you would know...though we never met I feel like we have known eachother for years...same being said with your mom...we have worked with one another for the past 9 months but I feel a connection with her and treat and love her as my own family..I too lost my father to an alcohol related incident and know the pain and suffering that all your friends and family are going through..people say things happen for a reason but sometimes I wish the reasons would be explained to get some understanding and maybe ease the pain a little...something like the tattoo I have on my arm which states "Love is Pain" Though you are gone your memory lives on forever and seems to unite all your friends family and people you dont even know! Though time seems to ease the pain..or shall we say make it a little more easier to accept the one thing it doesnt do is take away the memories of good times bad times and all the love given and taken from it. So as you watch on/over all your family and friends please know you will never be forgotten and only seem to drive people to do better and live life a little more to the fullest. I was a college friend of Amy Seibel (Joel's aunt) and had the pleasure of meeting the Pollack family in Huntington in the mid 1970s. I do not know how I stumbled onto this website, but every time I visit I am impressed with the strength of the love this family has for one another. I would imagine that this strength was necessary to cope with the untimely deaths of Joel and Amy. The loyalty and love felt for Joel by his friends and family, evidenced by this website, is inspiring to me, and I am sure it inspires others.

Wow - I haven't been on the site since the beginning. I think about you all the time Joelie polie! I thought about you a lot in April. My brother's best friend son was killed in a road rage car crash which was devastating he was only 18. It was as heart breaking to me as it was with you 9 years ago as still is. I went out to Dinner with Rina last night and we talked about you. I did not know you were such close friends with her. She misses you like I do. I have a picture of you & Frank in my office which has been there for 9 years :) Its nice to see that your father is a grandfather a few times over. Something he always looked forward to. Congratulations to Ricky and Jill. Oh, Can you believe TJ is 23 yrs old -He is a pain but has a great heart. He talks about you and Ricky every once in a while. My youngest Jon 18, is going to St.Johns this year and has received a scholarship for Risk Management. Please watch over them for me as things are much harder these days. Hey Joel, been a long while, thought I'd drop in because I'm feeling some cosmic closeness and I'm wondering if Wes and you weren't just running by. I was just in the process of sharing somewhere else when I thought I really needed to get some light here as well......I think you'll 'get' this, in fact it's something you already got.......I thank your beautiful family for continuing to make your spirit avaialable to even those who never 'knew' you. Tell Wes, the margaritas are on me and please enjoy one with him. ...."Last November I lost my best bud, he was my running partner, just an absolutely salt-of-the-earth kind of guy. I received an e-mail in June that explained why he couldn't finish a race he'd run, he had ALS. Pretty much blew me out of my chair. There's a movie, Too Much Too Fast about an ALS victim and his friends and family and the challenges one faces when dealing with a disease of this nature. Wes was divorced, had no children, limited resources, but in the end more love surrounding him than any man could ever hope for. He coined a phrase that was taped on his refrigerator, visitors would comment on it, and ask what it meant. It was on a pink post-it, it simply said, "Choose". He could have been embittered, he could have went into a shell and died a horribly lonely death, but he didn't, he chose to live with ALS, not die with it. The things we shared in those short five months really amount to a lifetime of wisdom and I learned that even in the gravest and most grim circumstance hope could prevail. His caregivers crosseed that invisible boundary and became not only friends, but family. I witnessed miracles of the human spirit. Of course not all miraracles have pleasent endings. Some miracles really aren't intended to. But those of us who shared those last days and moments know that by some incomprehensible grace we all were blessed with an experience of the most unconditional love we had ever received. He was a black belt, we both leaned Eastern in our personal philosophy and ultimately we understood to fight was futile, but that we could deflect blow after blow. Amazingly, he adapted to every loss of function as his physical being collapsed, while at the same time growing his spirit into something that was truly breathtaking. "Attitude." Another word he cherished, a word he had used his entire life when confronted with personal tragedy. We met on a trail, and it is where I left him, spread over all the miles we journeyed together, discovering and rediscovering the physical world and ourselves. No greater gift have I been given, no greater perspective on those things we cherish and hold dear. Sometimes we screw-up, too often we fail, but sometimes we get it, and we truly learn through seamingly bitter experience the value of our existance. We learn we are blessed, and fill with gratitude. We find beauty in the dark, and we find hope in desperation. We learn to be ourselves and ultimately that it is all we have to give."......peace to all who wander into this wonderful place.

What can I say except that I am so very proud to have had Joel, even for the short time his life existed on this earth. Well Son, I gave out the Joel S Pollack Scholarship Award last night from the Tri State Insurance Agents Association to a high school senior. The money goes toward her college expenses. That award along with the New York State Insurance Association's Young Agent of the Year Award reminds so many of what you accomplished in your short time on earth and what you meant to those you came in contact with. I was deeply saddened, and yet, so inspired to read about, and to see glimpses of in the photographs, of a young man who touched so many lives before losing his own. After reading about Joel’s journey of accomplishments and adventures, I almost feel as though I know him. I his short 34 years, it seems as though he managed to squeeze 61 seconds out of every minute, to seize every opportunity to create joy, not only for himself, but for all who knew him. It is quite rare to see someone whose talents are so multifaceted and whose accomplishments are so great, yet is described as having such humility. I am quite sure that Joel had much more life in him than can even be imagined. His senseless death 9 years ago, almost to the day, seems antithetical to the life he lived, filled with meaning and purpose. I only pray that his family and friends find comfort in the knowledge that they loved such a man, and that he loved him back.

I found this site through Toddo's glossary reference to Joel-visit here for some perspective....Well it was around 11:30 am when I saw that, it's now after 2:00pm and I've cried, laughed and just gone through a ton of emotions learing about Joel and what a special person he was and what a special spirit he IS! Cinqo De Mayo has a new meaning to me. It'll be the day I'll always remember as being the day that Ken Pollack was "thrown" his surprise Birthday party. Wow - what a grand affair! Friends and Family all joined together to be a part of this wonderful occasion. There we were...waiting in anticipation, the tension mounting for Ken and Jackie to walk through the door. "Here they come" one shouted. "Shhhh" another whispered". As everyone had their cameras and the handycams all ready to go with their eye attached to the lens, I was watching the expression on Jill and Ricky's face. There is SO much to see in a persons eyes, don't you think? They say that the eyes are the windows of a persons soul. How true, how very true. You could feel the love they have for their father. Real love, devotion, respect for a father who knows HOW to be a father/grandfather. Always involved in his childrens lives - loving them, guiding them, caring for them, hanging out with them and loving his grandkids to pieces. You have alot to be proud of Ken. Back to the subject at hand...then the moment came. The door opened and in came Ken and Jackie...It's not easy putting into words the expression that was on Ken's face but I think shock may tip the iceberg. Kudos to Jill, Jackie and Ricky for putting this all together without anyone spilling the "beans". That is not an easy task, I am sure. What a wonderful party. I think it took Ken a while to get his feet back on the floor but he was great. A true pro. It was such a great thing seeing Jill being a Mommy and Ricky getting ready to be a Dad. Carly, Jake and Jaden are such beautiful children. They are the cutest kids ever. Its wonderful seeing Jill as a Mommy. What a wonderful family Scott & Jill have. Feel the love? The afternoon was a great success. The speeches left tears in our eyes. No, not because of the length but because of the loving words and affection that came through from every family member and close friend who spoke. Ken - you are a loved, well respected, admired, loving, courageous, gracious, devoted young man. May G-D Bless you with many more happy, healthy Birthdays. I still remember when Jill thru a surprise party for "Ricky" and Gary, Doug, Dan & I showed up. I only met Joel a few times at your house in Port Washington on Reni Rd and I remembered his great Pollack smile! My family also suffered a great loss. Message for LBR@home.com - I tried to e-mail this to you based on your posted address, but alas, it failed several times. The above is not my web address either. Here I have responded using the Joel web page, but I do not have any way of knowing if you received it and it is very important to me that you know that someone cares. If you already received my e-mail, then this is repetitive, but I will risk it by telling you that today (now actually this was Sunday) I was 5 minutes behind a traffic accident on the Palisades Prkway that undoubtedly involved a fatality. I was reminded of the tragedy of Joel's death, and I had tears streaming down my face as I heard the visably shaken firechief tell his young sons (out for the day with their dad in the chiefs car) that there was alcohol involved, as the driver was holding a beer and there was a bottle placed on the back of the wreckage of the car. I spent the next few minutes telling my kids about Joel. Perhaps that is how I ended up here - like you - looking to his website for some sort of clarity. So it is here that we are BOTH brought together to heal, and that is why I reach out to you. I do not know you (or perhaps I do) but Joel (and his family) was my friend and because of that we are connected, you & I. I know what despair is and I know the frustration in having broken dreams. It is important to me that you know that you have friends and that no matter how much disappointment you are dealing with, there is someone (even a stranger) that cares. What I find helpful - even if it sounds dumb - is to listen to music and stare out the window. Sometimes the beauty of the simplest things can propel you past the moment and into the next. The sky, the wind (I know- it's 10000 degrees) even a bird can be a distraction from the harsh reality of the bad feelings you are experiencing. I am surely not a professional, not a doctor, not a lawyer, not anything, really. Not one day goes by when I don't see Joel's photo in my living room and think about how much I miss him. Since Joel's passing I never went back to the Hampton's. I never went to the funeral as it was too painful. I did visit his site alone on my own right after the funeral. Well eight years have past and I just spent my first weekend in the Hampton's and celebrated in his honor knowing that is what Joel would have wanted. Wow. Seems like old friends are all touching base around me these days. The last time I saw Joel he was sleeping over my house in L.A. while he was here on a short trip. OK....it's either your doing or kids skip generations and Jill & Scott got the prize. My grandchildren are so regimented and so happy. They sleep, get up, eat, play,then go back to sleep...the third time during the day is final. That was the only time they cried for 3 minutes and I stood in front of there cribs and conducted....they looked at me..looked at each other as if who's this crazy man...then lied down and went to sleep. I just spoke with Jill and Mom who told me Aunt Amy passed peacefully. Uncle Steven, Cousin Michael, Aunt Paula and Mom where all by her side as she left for her passage to Heaven.
